The Dolphins spent the day talking to Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy in regard to their head coaching position.

The 39-year-old McCoy recently completed his third season as the Broncos offensive coordinator and his first under head coach John Fox. McCoy’s ability to tailor the offense to fit the skill-set of Tim Tebow played a large role in the Broncos’ resurgence in the second half of the season, leading to an AFC West title and a playoff win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

McCoy was originally hired by Josh McDaniels, but previously worked under Fox with the Carolina Panthers from 2001-08. McCoy began his coaching career with the Panthers as an assistant in 2000 following a five-year professional career as a quarterback on NFL practice squads, NFL Europe and the CFL.

McCoy had been a candidate for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching job, but the Broncos advancement to the Divisional Playoff round prevented him from interviewing. The Jaguars hired former Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey instead.

In addition to McCoy, Bengals defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer, Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin and Bears special teams coach Dave Toub have interviewed with the Dolphins, as has interim head coach Todd Bowles. Other candidates that are on the Dolphins’ radar are New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael and Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano.
